RESPONSIBILITIES

The Highway Department is under the direction of the Williams County Engineer and is responsible for maintaining 396 miles of county highways and 299 bridges longer than 10 feet in clear span.

DRIVEWAYS

A permit from the County Engineer is required to install a driveway in a county road right of way to access a county road. There is no charge for this permit. The property owner is responsible for all costs associated with installing the driveway and maintenance of the driveway in the future.

All maintenance of private driveways is the responsibility of the property owner, including driveway culverts.

ROAD DITCH

Any property owner desiring to close a road ditch along a county road is required to get a permit from the County Engineer. There is no cost for this permit. All future maintenance of the tile that is installed to close a road ditch is the responsibility of the property owner.

COUNTY ROAD RIGHT OF WAY

A permit from the County Engineer is required to work within a county road right of way. There is no cost for this permit.

SPECIAL HAULING PERMIT POLICY

On January 18, 2007 the Williams County Board of Commissioners adopted by resolution a "Special Hauling Permit Policy." The "Manual For Issuance of Special Hauling Permits" and related forms can be downloaded.

Williams County requires that a special hauling permit be obtained from the Williams County Engineer prior to the use of a Williams County Roadway for Over Dimensional, Over Weight, or Over Dimensional and Overweight vehicles.
